Less Meat Monday

Do you regularly eat meat?
Ever wonder what your meat-eating habit is eating away?
Your fitness?
The planet?
Chances to live (which also belong to people in developing regions and to animals)?
Or all of the above?

A number of institutes around the globe have started MeatFree/Meatless Monday over a year ago. It's time for us to improve our health, to reduce our carbon footprint, to ameliorate world hunger, and to cut down the number of suffering animals, here at HKU.

Every Monday, choose from a range of delicious vegetarian items (items with Green Grin stickers) at cafes/restaurants on campus. With your Green Grin item in your hand, take a photo with the chicken/cow/pig outside Oliver's Super Sandwiches/Pacific Coffee/Starbucks. Upload onto Facebook: Less-Meat Monday Let's Meet @HKU. You will have a chance to win more sustainable and cruelty-free treats.

Go for Green Grin!

"MY FAVOURITE C.C. EATERIES"

As the construction of the Centennial Campus is in progress, the University would like to solicit input from the University community on what kind of catering outlets should be opened in the Centennial Campus. In the master plan, about 1,010 sq.m. of amenities space has been designated for the construction of 5 new catering outlets of different scale (small to moderate size) and mode of operation. It is now your time to voice out what kind of eateries are to your fancy or you are longing for. While some of the senior students and staff may not be able to enjoy the new facilities in the Centennial Campus, your valuable input would definitely help us developing a more diversified campus catering service and hence a better University experience for the University Community as a whole.

Just spend a minute and with a few clicks, prioritize and pick "MY MOST-WANTED C.C. EATERIES"; by completing the online survey at http://cedars.hku.hk/catering/2012poll.html, that is it! On behalf of the University and the future HKU current and future members, we would like to express our deepest thanks to your valuable input for excelling the Centennial Campus! Remember, your view counts! Cheers!!

SAVE FOOD PROJECT – LESS RICE DAY
有衣食運動 – 少飯平$1蚊日

The University and a few other sisters institutes have collaborated with the Greeners Action (綠領行動) to present the SAVE FOOD PROJECT – LESS RICE DAY (有衣食運動 – 少飯平$1蚊日). The aim of this campaign is to raise public awareness on reducing food waste hence solid waste and let the public realizes its burden towards the natural environment. Data from the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) revealed that in the year of 2007, over one-third of the solid waste dumping to the local landfills was food residue. A research by the Greeners Action also reflected that about 87% of people eating out could not finish their meal and nearly 70% of these people saying that the reason of leaving food behind was that the quantity was too much. Therefore, reducing food waste not only helps saving our environment but also save a penny from your pocket.

The "SAVE FOOD PROJECT – LESS RICE DAY (有衣食運動 – 少飯平$1蚊日)" would be conducted on every Wednesday from March 2009 to May 2009. Customers asking for "Less rice please! (少飯,唔該!)" when ordering specific dishes at the cashier counter would enjoy a $1 discount per dish ordered. For details, please refer to the attached poster.

A New Beginning and Updates

Greetings to you all and a warm welcome to all freshmen and returning students and fellow staff! Right at the commencement of the new academic year, I would like to update you the latest development of the University catering services and introduce to you some new caterers after the tendering exercises during the summer.

[Update on Tendering Exercises]

1. Fong Shu Chuen Amenities Centre Food Court (Main Campus) The contract was awarded to Betterment Catering Management Ltd. The caterer is experienced in operating student canteen at another University as well as other Chinese Fine Dining outlets downtown. The major renovation work of the premises would be carried out from Nov
2008 to early Jan 2009, after which the Food Court would serve a variety of cuisines including the provision of Chinese Dim Sum. The outlet would be converted to a multi-functional catering venue and equipped with general conference facilities, making it suitable for holding official functions as well as banquet and high table dinner. It is expected that an all new catering outlet would be ready by the commencement of the 2nd semester on Jan 12, 2009.
[N.B.: Temporary catering provision would be provided from 8:00a.m. to 4:30p.m. (Mon-Fri) beginning from Sep 1, 2008 until early Nov 2008]

2. Bay View Restaurant (Sassoon Road)
The contract was awarded to Lucky Channel Ltd., the same operator of Bay View Restaurant for the past 5 years. The caterer would put some investment to upgrade the existing catering services. As a few major renovation works would be conducted in parallel with some works which will be done by the University during the semester break in Dec 2008/Jan 2009, no major renovation has been conducted by the caterer and therefore there was no interruption to the catering services at this outlet.
